What is dental erosion?

Dental erosion is a condition in which the hard, outer layer of the teeth, known as enamel, is gradually worn away by exposure to acid. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including acid reflux disease, frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages, and certain medications. Dental erosion can also occur as a result of frequent vomiting, which exposes the teeth to stomach acid.

Over time, dental erosion can cause the teeth to become sensitive, discolored, and weak. In severe cases, it can even lead to the loss of tooth structure, which can increase the risk of tooth decay and other dental problems. Treatment for dental erosion may include the use of fluoride treatments, dental bonding, and dental crowns to protect the remaining tooth structure and prevent further damage. Preventative measures, such as reducing consumption of acidic foods and beverages and maintaining good oral hygiene, can also help to prevent dental erosion.

Regular visit to your dentist may help detect the problem early and its progression may be stopped.
